Introduction: Technology refers to systems, methods and tools that result from scientific knowledge being used for practical purposes. The English meaning of technology is technology. Today we have new technology in every field which helps us in keeping different types of information safe. In the scientific age, today we have got information about the deep secrets hidden inside the earth, sky, planets, plants and sea. Where earlier all this information was kept safe in books.
Technology Helps us in Preserving Information: Today, as a result of the development of new technology, we have new devices like laptop, computer, mobile in which all the information can be secured. But imagine, if there is a power shortage, these devices will not be charged and then all the information stored in them will be lost. But generational relationships preserve knowledge forever. Generational relationships are not based on books. It is a mutual relationship between elders and children who keep transferring knowledge from one generation to the next.
In ancient times, when paper was not invented, knowledge was transmitted orally from one generation to the next. The elders of the house used to make their children apply the knowledge in their practical life through stories or by inculcating life values in their lives. There is a big difference between information and knowledge. Information points towards facts and figures. Whereas life, understanding of life values, culture everything comes under knowledge. We absorb information through rote learning process. When knowledge becomes a part of life, there is no need to memorize it.
Generational connection helps us in preserving wisdom
But how can technology protect practical values, virtues, way of life, customs and culture? No technology can protect the feelings of the mind, decorum of conduct, decency and civility. Knowledge of all this comes through generational relationship. And generational relationships are what preserve this knowledge. We will pass on the knowledge of ethics and integrity that we have learned from our elders to our future generations.
All this practical knowledge will end within one generation. It is only mutual relationships that pass this knowledge on from generation to generation. In ancient times, our Vedic knowledge was preserved through this generational relationship. It continued to be passed on from one generation to the next through oral tradition. Later, sage Vedavyas collected that knowledge in the form of four Vedas.
The Hindu customs and culture that we are proud of today is the result of this generational relationship. The library of Nalanda University was filled with millions of books full of knowledge. Our temples were also storehouses of knowledge and culture. The library of Nalanda was burnt by the Muslim ruler Ghaznavi. It is said that lakhs of books kept burning for a month. So did the burning of those books destroy our Hindu customs and culture? Was Hindu culture destroyed by destroying lakhs of temples?
Due to the destruction of the library, information was definitely destroyed but the culture which was ingrained in our blood and which was a part of our behavior and conduct, could not be destroyed by anyone. That culture and that knowledge continued from generation to generation. No external invader could destroy that knowledge.
Conclusion: Whatever knowledge we have today that we are proud of is the result of this generational relationship, it is because of those generational relationships that this knowledge could be preserved and will be preserved in future too.
